Aural Textiles 2.0 • Distributed Capabilities • 2019-20

In part 2.0 of this collaborative research project, Aural Textiles has expanded to include five non-textile practitioners. The aim is to continue recording sound within our environments and for the original six to work with non-textile makers. Our first workshop in April 2019 resulted in ambitious plans for potential collaborations. I am excited to be researching ideas with ceramicist Carol Sinclair and furniture maker Isabelle Moore, looking at sounds from our making practices. It’s an incredible group of people to be working with and their friendship and support has proved invaluable as our work has paused due the the coronavirus situation. Because of different work commitments earlier in the year Carol, Isabelle and I had not long been exploring our concepts in detail, but were due to start experimenting and developing our ideas just when ‘lockdown’ began. Our work has therefore been on hold while we are unable to visit one another’s studios, as we soon realised that we preferred actual physical meet-ups for the best outcomes. We were all due to exhibit our work at a group exhibition in September - but that, like everything else for the moment, is on hold…
